In India, individuals with Intellectual Disabilities (ID) often face an uphill battle when it comes to employment. Gopalakrishnan B from Tamil Nadu was one among them. After completing his 12th standard from a government school, he struggled to find a job despite a strong desire to support his family.
His disability made traditional pathways harder, and every rejection pushed him further into uncertainty. A tragedy had already shaken their world when Gopalakrishnan lost his father in an accident at just 14 years old. Since then, his mother—his only caregiver—continued to shoulder the family’s burdens despite her fragile health.
Watching her work tirelessly, Gopalakrishnan silently made himself a promise:
“One day, I will take care of her—the way she’s always taken care of me.”
Still determined, he kept searching for a way forward. That’s when hope arrived in the form of Sarthak Educational Trust.
Through a mobilizer’s visit to his community, Gopalakrishnan learned about Sarthak’s skilling and placement program for persons with disabilities. He joined with quiet hope and an open mind.
Over the next three months, he immersed himself in training—learning basic computer skills, soft skills, English communication, and sector-specific skills in Hospitality. He explored roles like Data Entry Operator and Home Delivery Executive, practiced resume writing, and mastered interview techniques.
At first shy and reserved, he slowly began to open up—responding in class, participating actively, and gaining confidence in his abilities.
His hard work paid off.
With Sarthak’s support, Gopalakrishnan secured employment with Holiday Inn as a Guest Service Associate, earning ₹2.4 LPA. It wasn’t just a job—it was a turning point. He had fulfilled the promise he made to his mother.
For the first time, he could say with pride:
“Now it’s my turn to take care of you.”
Today, Gopalakrishnan is more than just an employee—he is a symbol of resilience, determination, and the power of opportunity.
His journey is proof that disability does not define a person—opportunity does.
At Sarthak Educational Trust, we are proud to stand beside individuals like Gopalakrishnan. Together, we work to build an inclusive society where every person, regardless of ability, can dream, grow, and thrive.
